Let’s get baking y’all!

Ingredients Notes

  • Granny Smith Apples: Fresh apples make for a nice juicy inside. Granny Smith apples have a nice tart flavor that balances the sweet.
  • Crescent Rolls: Crescent rolls are convenient and easy to keep on hand. No fancy cutting or folding is required.
  • Butter: Well you know the saying butter makes everything better and it really does!
  • Brown Sugar & Granulated Sugar: I like a combination of both. The sweetness of the granulated sugar and the caramel flavor of the brown sugar make this extra delicious.
  • Cinnamon: Make sure your cinnamon is fresh and not expired for best tasting results.
  • Mountain Dew or Lemon-Lime Soda: Give a bright flavor and aids in the crispy baking process.
  • Vanilla (optional): This really is optional. I have made it both ways and each is delicious. It adds just a hint of vanilla for even more depth of flavor.

How to Make Easy Apple Dumplings

Be sure to see the recipe card below for exact ingredients and full recipe instructions!

Step 1 | Prepare Baking Pan & Ingredients

Apple dumpling prep images showing apple slices being rolled into crescent roll dough.

Preheat oven, spray baking pan with cooking spray or butter.

Roll out crescent dough and pull off triangles.

Then peel and slice apples (An apple corer slicer works great). You can leave the skins on the apples if you prefer them that way.

Next, put two apple slices in each crescent triangle and roll-up. Then place them in the bottom of the baking dish.

Step 2 | Prepare Sauce

In a small saucepan, place butter and melt. Add in sugars, cinnamon, and vanilla – then whisk to combine.

Pour the mixture over the apple crescents.

Step 3 | Surround with Mountain Dew and Bake

Pour Mountain Dew (or lemon-lime soda) around the outside edges of the pan crescents (not on top of dumplings).

Next, it’s into the oven to bake.

Tips

  • For faster prep use an apple corer/slicer. This also makes the sliced more uniform for even cooking.
  • Any kind of apple works for this recipe. I recommend granny smith because the tart goes well with the sweet, but if you have other apples on hand you can use what you have.
  • Want to reduce the recipe for a smaller crowd? Just cut the recipe in half or adjust the slider on the recipe card to 8 servings.

Variations and Substitutions:

  • Try using apple pie spice instead of cinnamon for a change-up in flavor.
  • Use Ginger Beer or Ginger Ale instead of Mountain Dew – Ginger really compliments apples.
  • Add a caramel bit or two or some caramel topping in with the apple for a caramel apple flavor.
  • Try this with other fruit flavors such as peaches, blueberries, strawberries, or blackberries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why use Mountain Dew or Soda?

There is something about the carbonation that creates moisture for the dumplings. While they cook they boil in the soda and then cook down into a gooey sauce. It also makes for a really crispy crust! Don’t skip it.

What other kind of soda can you use?

Any lemon-lime flavor will work. We love Mountain Dew, but 7-Up, Sprite, or even ginger ale works well.

What to serve with apple dumplings?

Let the dumplings cool just a little bit and serve warm – topped with vanilla or butter pecan ice cream. It is also delicious with homemade whipped cream or a dollop of cool whip and a drizzle of caramel sauce.

Storage and Reheating

Storage:

Allow dumplings to cool completely, then cover with foil or plastic wrap or place in an air-tight container. Store in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days.

Freeze:

Allow the apple dumplings to cool completely, then cover with foil or freezer-safe wrap, bag, or air-tight container. Freeze up to 3 months.

Thaw in the refrigerator before reheating.

Reheat:

To reheat individual servings, place desired amount on a microwave-safe dish and reheat. Start with 30 seconds until the desired temperature is reached.

You can also place them in the oven for 10-20 minutes covered with foil. The time will depend on how much you are heating up at one time and how cool they are to start with.
