Ingredients

  • 1 ½ sticks butter (1 ¼ cups)
  • 2 cans cherry pie filling (21 ounce cans)
  • 20 ounces crushed pieapple
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 15.25 ounce yellow cake mix (butter and white also work)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350° F.
  • Butter (or spray with cooking spray) a 9x13 baking dish with ½ of one stick of butter before melting remaining butter.
  • Add 2 cans of the cherry pie filling, crushed pineapples, and vanilla extract to the baking dish. Mix until fully combined.
  • To a medium bowl add the cake mix and ½ cup (1 stick) melted butter. Mix with a fork until fully combined. Don’t over-mix it.
  • With clean hands sprinkle the cake mixture on top.
  • Drizzle ¼ cup of melted butter on top of the cake mix.
  • Cook for 45 minutes.
  • Remove from the oven and allow it to rest for at least 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Do Not Over Mix – Only mix the ingredients until they are evenly combined. Over-mixing will lead to an undesired texture.
  • Real Butter – Use real butter, not margarine, for dump cake recipes.
  • Butter Slices – If preferred, chill and cut the butter into thin slices and add it to the top, rather than melting butter and drizzling it on top (See dry cake mix method below).
Using Dry Cake Mix Method: Alternatively, you can use the other method for adding the cake batter to the fruity filling.  Make as directed up through step 3. Then sprinkle the dry cake mix over the filling. Simply cut pats of cold butter (1.5 to 2 sticks)and add it over the dry cake mix. It will magically mix as the butter melts while baking and create a delicious dump cake. Likewise, you can drizzle the melted butter over the dry cake mix rather than adding pats of butter to the top.
If you would like to leave out the pineapple, you can just omit it and use 2 cans of cherry pie filling as the base for a Cherry Dump Cake.
