Why you’ll love this Apple Butter Vinaigrette

Nikki in the kitchen with key lime tarts on the counter.

I first made this vinaigrette when I was craving something a little more special than plain oil and vinegar — but didn’t want to overcomplicate things. My family loved it right away (especially on crisp fall and winter greens) and now it’s a staple for busy weeknights and holiday meals alike.

If you’ve got a jar of apple butter hanging out in the fridge, this is such a good way to put it to use. It’s smooth, sweet, and tangy — and it comes together in just minutes. A simple homemade dressing that brings something extra to the table

It’s the perfect complement to my Pears and Apple Salad with Feta!

Here’s what makes it special!

Flavor: Bright, tangy flavor with a hint of sweetness.

Uses simple ingredients you probably already have.

Great for both everyday salads and special holiday meals.

Keeps well in the fridge — perfect for make‑ahead meals.

  • Avocado oil or olive oil: Avocado oil is neutral; olive oil adds a richer flavor.
  • Red wine vinegar: Brings tang and balances the sweetness.
  • Dijon mustard: Helps emulsify and adds a slight bite.
  • Apple butter: Sweet, smooth, and full of apple flavor.
  • Maple syrup: Adds natural sweetness; honey works too.
  • Kosher salt: Enhances flavor — use coarse salt for best balance.
  • Black pepper: Adds a little contrast and depth.
  • Cayenne pepper (optional): A pinch adds subtle heat if desired.

What to Serve with Apple Vinaigrette Salad Dressing

This apple butter vinaigrette pairs beautifully with winter and fall salads – like my harvest salad with Apples and Pears, but it’s also great year-round on anything that could use a little sweet-tangy lift.

  • Greens with roasted veggies: Drizzle over a salad with mixed greens, roasted sweet potatoes, pecans, and dried cranberries.
  • Shaved Brussels sprouts or cabbage: Toss them with a shredded veggie slaw for a fresh side dish.
  • Grain bowls: Use it on bowls with quinoa or farro, roasted apples, and chicken or chickpeas.
  • Chicken or pork: Makes a great finishing drizzle or marinade for grilled or roasted meats.
