Greek Chicken Meatball Ingredients

Ingredients needed to make Greek chicken meatballs.
  • Ground Chicken: Ground chicken creates tender, light meatballs that allow all the flavors to shine!
  • Avocado Oil: Coat the parchment paper and the meatballs with avocado oil or your favorite cooking oil to prevent sticking!
  • Egg: Holds everything together, creating the perfect texture and preventing the meatballs from falling apart.
  • Italian Breadcrumbs: Adds structure while keeping the meatballs tender. The Italian seasoning in these breadcrumbs provides additional flavor depth!
  • Garlic: For an added depth of aroma and flavor!
  • Lemon Juice: A bit of fresh lemon juice brightens all the flavors.
  • Herbs: Add fresh dill and fresh mint for a bright, herbaceous flavor.
  • Spices: You will need Italian seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, red pepper flakes, dried oregano, coarse kosher salt, and ground black pepper to season up the meatballs to perfection!

Recipe Tips

  • Don’t overmix the meat! Handle the meatball mixture gently to keep the meatballs tender rather than tough.
  • Use an ice cream scoop to make the meatballs into consistent sized balls. This will ensure even cooking!
  • Not sure if they are done cooking? Use a meat thermometer to ensure they reach 165°F without overcooking!
  • Let them rest before serving. Allow the meatballs to cool for 5 minutes after baking to help them set up.
  • To make ahead, form the meatballs and refrigerate up to a day before baking for convenience!

Variations and Substitutions

  • Meat options: Substitute ground turkey, lamb, or beef for different flavor profiles.
  • Gluten-free: Use gluten-free breadcrumbs to make gluten-free Greek meatballs!
  • Heat level: If you are sensitive to spice, you can omit the red pepper flakes. If you like your food spicy, add a bit more!
  • Shape options: Form into mini meatballs for appetizers or flatten into patties for sandwiches, just keep in mind that the cooking time will vary!

Recipe FAQs

Why are my chicken meatballs dry?

Ground chicken can dry out easily. Make sure not to overmix or overcook them. The egg and breadcrumbs help maintain moisture, as does using ground chicken thigh meat instead of breast.

Are these meatballs kid-friendly?

These are very kid-friendly! For younger palates, you might reduce or omit the red pepper flakes.

How do I know when chicken meatballs are done?

The safest method is using a meat thermometer to ensure they reach 165°F. Visually, they should be golden brown on the outside and no longer pink in the center.

Storage

Storage: Store cooked meatballs in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

Freeze: Arrange completely cooled meatballs on a baking sheet and freeze until solid, then transfer to a freezer bag for up to 3 months.

Reheating: Warm refrigerated meatballs in a 350°F oven for 10 minutes or microwave on medium power until heated through.

Meal prep: These meatballs maintain their texture and reheat well, making them perfect for weekly meal preparation!

What to Serve with Greek Chicken Meatballs

Delicious Greek chicken meatballs should always be served with cool and creamy tzatziki sauce, whether serving them as a meal or an appetizer.

For a full meal, serve them in warm pita pockets for a handheld meal, or create a Greek chicken meatballs bowl on a bed of rice with cucumbers, tomatoes, briny kalamata olives, and tangy feta cheese.

These would also be delicious served with Mediterranean orzo salad, on a chopped Greek salad, or as an appetizer with creamy garlic hummus and fresh veggies!

  1. HAVEN’T MADE THESE YET BUT INTEND TO MAKE THEM. I HAVE A QUESTION, CAN I SUBSTITUTE ANY OTHER OIL IN LIEU OF “AVOCADO OIL” WHICH I DON’T HAVE.
    THANK YOU,
