Creamy Swiss Chicken Casserole is a super simple, delicious dinner recipe! This creamy chicken bake recipe has 6 easy ingredients to help you get supper on the table in a hurry!
Packed with tender chicken, smothered in a mouth-watering cheesy creamy wine sauce, and topped off with a buttery stuffing mixture. This flavor combination makes for an irresistible chicken casserole everyone will love!
I have been making this recipe for most of my married life. I am not sure where it originally came from, but my friend Paton shared this recipe with me when she baked it for my family after the birth of my daughter.
Around here, that’s what we do! Take care of our friends when they need a little help! And I am so glad she shared this with me.
It’s one of my family’s favorites, and it’s a super simple weeknight dinner! And one that tastes good enough for Sunday supper, too!
After all, who doesn’t love wine and cheese together? I mean, shouldn’t it be perfect for a chicken casserole?
Why You’ll Love This Creamy Swiss Chicken Bake
- Super easy: 6 simple ingredients combined to make dinner easy.
- Super tasty: Everyone, from kids to adults alike, just loves this creamy chicken bake recipe. It’s packed full of flavor!
- Super fast: In the time it takes to saute your chicken, a quick stir, and topping off of convenience items. Then dinner is ready in no time.
Chicken Stuffing Bake Ingredients
- Chicken – I start this with cooked chicken that I usually saute. But you can use boiled chicken, baked chicken, Instant Pot Chicken, or even a rotisserie or leftover chicken.
- Swiss Cheese – I use sliced cheese, like you get in the deli or cheese section, for sandwiches, of the store.
- Cream of Chicken Soup – Store-bought classic or even low-fat can be used. I typically use the original in this.
- Wine – A nice crisp white wine that’s not too sweet. A rich red works well too.
- Stuffing – I use boxed stuff (like Stove Top). If you buy the bagged one, you will only need about 2 cups.
- Butter – I used a salted stick of butter. I use 2 tablespoons to cook the chicken and 6 tablespoons for the topping. But it won’t hurt to use the whole stick on the topping 😉
How to Make Chicken Swiss Cheese Stuffing Casserole
✱ Be sure to see the recipe card below for exact ingredients and full recipe instructions!
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and grab a 9 X 13 casserole dish. You can also use an oven-safe pan and skip the casserole dish. I used a cast-iron skillet for this. (One less dish to wash!)
Step 1 | Pan fry chicken & prepare sauce
Pan-fry your chicken in butter. Cook until they are no longer pink on the inside.
In a bowl, mix together the wine and the cream of chicken soup.
Step 2 | Layer with Cheese, Sauce, & Stuffing
If needed, transfer to a casserole dish and cover chicken evenly with Swiss cheese.
Pour the soup and wine mixture over the cheese layer.
Top with stuffing and drizzle butter on top! You can also toss the stuffing with the melted butter and then sprinkle it on top.
Step 3| Bake & Serve
Bake for 20 to 30 minutes or until bubbly and the stuffing is nicely browned! Since everything is cooked, you are just getting that sauce nice and bubbly, delicious!
Plate it up and serve with your favorite sides. It goes really well with rice pilaf, green beans, or a salad.

Swiss Cheese Chicken Casserole Variations
Want to change up the recipe for a little variety! Here are a few scrumptious suggestions.
- Mushroom Swiss Chicken – Add a small can of your favorite mushrooms or 1 cup of fresh mushrooms into the soup mixture.
- Swiss Chicken and Veggies – Add 2 cups of thawed broccoli, peas, carrots, or green beans into the soup mixture.
- Changing the wine changes the flavor profile of the dish. This Swiss chicken with white wine (I usually use chardonnay) is also nice with a robust red wine.
- Change up the cheeses in this creamy Swiss chicken casserole – While Swiss cheese is the original, other cheeses are also very delicious in this dish. I recommend Gouda, Fontina, Mozzarella, and Provolone, which are also great choices.
- Try different stuffing mixes. I buy the boxed stuffing mix and most often get the chicken flavor, but the cornbread, savory herb, and even the sage blend are fantastic
Tips For Making This Chicken Stuffing Bake
- Use a cast-iron skillet or oven-safe pan for a one-dish, easy clean-up.
- Use a good-quality chicken. This will mean the chicken is tender and delicious.
- Use full-fat original ingredients for the best flavor. This is a comfort dish. Lower-fat items will work. However, you will get a creamier texture and the richest flavor with full-fat ingredients.
- You can use white or red wine. White wine lends a light, crisp flavor while red wine gives the dish a bolder, richer flavor. Both are equally delicious.
- If you don’t cook with wine or do not have it, substitute with chicken broth or milk.
How to Store Leftover Chicken and Swiss Casserole
Have any leftovers? You are in luck! These are so tasty the next day!
Leftovers:
Place in an air-tight container or separate into meal-sized portions and store:
- Place in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days.
- To reheat, I recommend just heating in the microwave until heated through.
- You can also freeze cooked leftovers for 1 month.
Freezer:
This recipe will freeze great for a make-ahead meal.
Place in a freezer-safe dish or foil casserole pan. Make as directed, except do not put the stuffing mix on top. Then wrap it with foil and plastic wrap and freeze it for up to 4 months for the best flavor.
When ready to bake, thaw in the refrigerator for 24 hours, then prepare the stuffing topping and sprinkle it over the top.
Bake as directed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, if you prefer not to cook the chicken, you can prepare the casserole as instructed. Then, cover the dish with foil and bake it for 40 minutes. Remove the foil and bake it for 20 minutes uncovered. Be sure to check the internal temperature of the chicken (the Chicken should be cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F).
Sure, if you want, you can use a reduced-fat cheese and healthy request cream soup to lighten it up.
