*BONUS: This Chocolate Trifle recipe is the perfect centerpiece for the dessert table! The hardest part is keeping little (and big) fingers out before it is time to serve!

It’s an easy dessert recipe perfect for when you need to feed a crowd but don’t have all the time in the world to make something more complex. Plus, the rich, creamy, and chocolatey flavor is just as satisfying as any other delicious dessert!

When you’re planning on feeding more than just a few people, dessert recipes often get a little tedious and take significant time. And we all know that we can use as much time as possible when prepping for a gathering of any kind, especially during the holidays.

That’s why I love having a list of easy, crowd-pleasing recipes ready to pull from. Some of my favorites are this Magnolia Bakery Banana Pudding, this rich S’mores Dip Recipe for dipping cookies, graham crackers, or fresh fruit, and this No Bake Key Lime Pie In A Jar recipe!

Ingredient Notes

Labeled ingredients needed to make cheesecake brownie trifle.
  • Brownie ingredients: Use a box of your favorite brownie mix and the brownie ingredients required, like eggs, water, oil, or butter. Or you can make homemade brownies if you do not want to use boxed brownies. I prefer fudgy brownies with this chocolatey recipe, but Cake Brownies are also delicious!
  • Heavy cream: Make chocolate whipped cream with a base of heavy whipping cream.
  • Powdered sugar: Sweeten the whipped cream with soft powdered sugar.
  • Cocoa: Add pure cocoa powder to the whipped cream for rich chocolate flavor.
  • Cream cheese: Softened cream cheese will work as the base of the cheesecake mix.
  • Sugar: Sweeten the cheesecake with classic white granulated sugar.
  • Vanilla: Vanilla extract brings a rich creaminess to the overall flavor.
  • Extra Ingredients: If desired, top the trifle with caramel sauce and chocolate, like mini Twix bars, chocolate chips, M&Ms, or others. I used a mix of milk chocolate and dark chocolate chips.

How To Make Brownie and Chocolate Trifle Recipe

Be sure to see the recipe card below for exact ingredients and full recipe instructions!

Step 1 | Bake, cool, and cut brownies

Begin this easy recipe by making the brownies according to the packaging instructions. Super simple, right? Most brownies will take about 25 minutes to bake. After, let them cool for about an hour.

Once completely cooled, cut the chewy brownies into 2 to 3-inch cubes, reserving about 1.5 cups of brownie bits for the trifle topping.

Step 2 | Make chocolate whipped cream

Next, add two cups of cream, powdered sugar, and cocoa to a large bowl. Use an electric mixer or a mixing bowl and a hand mixer, if possible. A stand mixer works well, too!

Combine the ingredients for about 3 to 4 minutes until stiff peaks form, scraping the edges with a spatula as you go. Then, set the bowl aside for later.

Step 3 | Combine the cheesecake mixture

In a separate bowl, add the cream cheese, the remaining heavy whipping cream, white sugar, and vanilla, mixing for a couple of minutes until the ingredients are well combined.

Scrape the sides of the bowl with a spatula halfway through mixing.

Step 4 | Mix the whipped cream & cheesecake mixture together

Now, add the cocoa whipped cream to the cream cheese mixture and use a spatula to fold it in until most of the streaks are gone.

Step 5 | Layer ingredients

Then, layer the ingredients into the trifle bowl. First, add ⅓ of the brownies, then three tablespoons of caramel in an even layer. Next, spread ⅓ of the cheesecake filling and continue the same order until all ingredients are used.

Step 6 | Add toppings and dig in!

Finally, add the reserved brownie bits and three more tablespoons of caramel sauce. Then, sprinkle with your favorite chocolates and enjoy!

Tips

  • Pretty Layers– For clean and even layers, carefully add the ingredients using a rubber spatula or- even better- add the cheesecake filling to a piping bag and swirl from the inside out to form a perfectly even and presentable layer each time. No matter how you choose to do it, the key is to be gentle, so you don’t smush the layers into one another.
  • Fluffy Whipped Cream– For the perfect silky-smooth texture, don’t overmix the whipped cream and the cheesecake mixture.
  • Soften Ingredients– To make mixing easier, have the ingredients at room temperature before beginning, like the cream cheese.
  • Smaller Brownie Bites– If preferred, cut the brownies into 1-inch to 1.5-inch squares instead for mini bites.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Take a Short-Cut: Buy brownies and Cool Whip to make it even easier! Omit the heavy cream and powdered sugar, mix the cocoa into the Cool Whip, then add it to the recipe like you would with the homemade version.
  • More Delicious Toppings: Have fun with the recipe by including your favorite chocolate treats, like crushed Oreo cookies, chocolate syrup, toffee bits, or chopped candy bars, on top of the trifle.
  • Vanilla Cheesecake: Leave out the cocoa for a classic cheesecake mixture without the chocolate flavor. The creamy vanilla flavor goes beautifully with the fudgy brownie layer.
  • Peanut Butter Brownie Cheesecake Trifle: Swap the caramel for a peanut butter mixture with creamy peanut butter and powdered sugar. Then, top the dessert with Mini Reeces Cups and Reeces Pieces.
  • Oreo Brownie Trifle: Swap the fudgy brownie bits pieces for Oreos, adding crushed Oreos to the cheesecake mixture and sprinkling on top!

Recipe FAQs

How far in advance can I make a brownie trifle?

I recommend making this dessert recipe no more than 24 hours before serving for the best flavor and texture. While the flavors are all still there, the brownie pieces tend to become soggy after a while.

What type of brownie mix should I use?

You can use your favorite box of brownie mix. Ghirardelli brownie mix is known for being super delicious and robust in chocolate flavor, but any brand will do the trick!

What type of bowl should I use for a trifle?

A trifle bowl is best– It’s essentially a large glass bowl with a flat bottom, raised on a stand. However, using another bowl won’t make the dessert any less scrumptious. It’s best to use a clear container to show off all the delicious layers, but if you’re in a pinch, anything will do!

Storage

Refrigerate: Store leftover trifle in the refrigerator in an airtight container or sealed with aluminum foil or plastic wrap. The recipe will last for about five days, remaining fresh for the next time you need a chocolate fix!

I don’t suggest freezing the brownie trifle because the ingredients lose texture and become soggy once thawed.

What to Serve with No-Bake Cheesecake Brownie Trifle

Try this decadent cheesecake brownie dessert with a scoop of creamy homemade ice cream, like my Chocolate Chip Cookie Ice Cream, M&M Ice Cream, or this Strawberry Cheesecake Ice Cream. The best part is that these ice cream recipes are “no-churn,” meaning you don’t need a fancy ice cream machine to enjoy homemade ice cream!
