This recipe makes a super beautiful cookie in no time at all. It’s your shortcut to pure dessert satisfaction without the hassle. With store-bought shortbread cookies as the star, you can skip the whole “start from scratch” ordeal and jump right into the deliciousness.

Think of this recipe as your dessert superhero cape. It’s perfect for those impromptu get-togethers when friends swing by unexpectedly. Or those school parties your kids forget to tell you about- who doesn’t have that one who always tells you until the night before? Well, this recipe comes to the rescue!

But it’s not just for casual occasions. You can also elevate your gift game. Homemade treats are a thoughtful way to show appreciation or celebrate special moments. Imagine packaging these Twix cookies in a charming box – you’ve just become the master of meaningful gifts! If you want to put a homemade touch, you can switch the store-bought items out for homemade (those instructions are here, too).

Whatever the occasion- from cookie exchanges to church suppers, a friend or family potluck, to anything in between! This easy semi-homemade Twix cookie recipe is your trusty sidekick!

Labeled ingredients needed to make twix cookies.

  • Shortbread Cookies: Purchase premade shortbread cookies, like Keebler Sandies, from your local grocery store or bakery. Look for plain shortbread cookies that are not overly sweet, as the caramel and chocolate in the Twix cookies will add sweetness.
  • Caramel Dip: You can use store-bought caramel sauce, like Marzetti Dip, or make your own creamy caramel from scratch if you prefer a homemade touch. If using store-bought caramels, melt them in a microwave or on the stovetop until they are smooth and can be easily spread over the shortbread cookies.
  • Chocolate: For the chocolate layer, use high-quality chocolate chips or a chocolate bar. You can choose between milk chocolate, semi-sweet, or dark chocolate, depending on your preference. I used a combination for this batch.
  • Sea Salt: If you like the sweet and salty combination, consider sprinkling a bit of coarse or flake sea salt on top. You could even put it on top of the caramel layer before adding the chocolate.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Toppings: Customize your Twix cookies by adding toppings like crushed nuts (almonds, pecans, or peanuts) or shredded coconut to the chocolate layer. Think of your favorite candy bar and add in those layers.
  • Flavor Additions: Mix a teaspoon of espresso powder into the melted chocolate for a coffee-flavored twist. Try a dash of cinnamon or a pinch of cayenne pepper powder for a hint of spice in your Twix cookies.
  • Decorations: Drizzle white chocolate or colored candy melts on top of the dark or milk chocolate layer for an attractive finish. Or use edible gold or silver dust for a touch of elegance.
  • If you can’t find a shortbread cookie, this would also be delicious on sugar cookies or even a peanut butter cookie. Who am I kidding? A chocolate cookie, too!

How To Make Easy Twix Cookies

Be sure to see the recipe card below for exact ingredients and full recipe instructions!

Step 1 | Add Caramel to Shortbread Cookies

First, take your shortbread cookies and place about one teaspoon of caramel dip onto each one. Use a spoon to spread the caramel evenly over the top of the shortbread base, making sure it’s nicely coated.

Step 2 | Melt and Top with Chocolate

Next, it’s time to melt your chocolate.

Grab a microwave-safe bowl and heat the chocolate in 15-second increments. Stir after each increment until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth.

Once your chocolate is ready, spoon about one teaspoon of the melted chocolate chips onto the caramel-covered cookies. Again, use your spoon or an offset spatula to make sure the chocolate is spread evenly over the caramel layer.

If you’re a fan of that sweet-salty combo, you can sprinkle a little salt on top of your cookies at this point. This step is optional, but it can add a nice touch of flavor.

Step 3 | Let Set Up and Enjoy

Now, place your cookies on a baking sheet and pop them into the freezer for about 10 minutes. This will help the caramel and chocolate firm up nicely.

Once they’re set, your semi-homemade Twix cookies are ready to enjoy!  Just grab one (or a few), and savor the deliciousness you’ve created.

It is a delicious cookie with a perfect texture- a buttery shortbread base, chewy caramel, and soft chocolate top! The perfect treat!

Tips

  • Use High-Quality Ingredients: While semi-homemade recipes are convenient, using high-quality shortbread cookies, caramel, and chocolate can elevate the final taste and texture of your Twix cookies.
  • Melt Chocolate Carefully: When melting the chocolate, do it in short increments and stir well between each one to avoid overheating and seizing the chocolate. Microwaves can vary, so keep a close eye on it.
  • Chill the Cookies: Don’t skip the step of placing the cookies in the freezer for a short time. It helps the caramel and chocolate layers set quickly and creates a nice, crisp texture. Don’t leave them in too long, though. The layers can start to separate. They can set up at room temperature if you prefer; they will take longer (30 minutes or more).

  • 1 cup of softened butter
  • ½ cup of powdered sugar, sifted (plus a little more for dusting counter)
  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour.

Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy (about 2 minutes). Add in the flour and mix until the dough just comes together.

Turn dough onto powdered sugar dusted counter and roll gently in a log about 2 inches wide. Then, wrap cookie dough with plastic wrap and allow it to firm in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour, but you can make it ahead for up to 3 days.

Once the dough is firm, slice the cookies into ¼-inch thick rounds and place them on a baking tray for 18-20 minutes or until just golden. Cool slightly, then transfer to a cookie rack until completely cooled.

Recipe FAQs

Can I use homemade shortbread cookies instead of store-bought ones?

Absolutely! Homemade shortbread cookies can add a personal touch to your Twix cookies. Just make sure they’re of similar size and thickness to the store-bought ones for consistent results.

Can I Make Just One Cookie?

Yes, I love this cookie because you can keep the cookies in the freezer to keep them fresh and make them as you go. You will add the caramel to the top and melt 10 chocolate chips to place them on top.

Can I make mini Twix cookies for a party or as bite-sized treats?

Absolutely! You can use smaller-sized cookies and reduce the amount of caramel and chocolate accordingly to make bite-sized Twix cookies.

Can I use chocolate melting wafers instead of chocolate chips for the chocolate layer?

Yes, while I prefer the taste of real chocolate. You can use chocolate melting wafers as they are a convenient option and work well for coating the cookies. Follow the package instructions for melting and coating.

How can I make Twix cookies with fewer calories or sugar?

To reduce calories or sugar, you can explore sugar-free or low-sugar alternatives for cookies, caramel, and chocolate. Using dark chocolate (with a higher cocoa content) may also reduce the overall sugar content.

Storage

Storage: Place the cookies flat in a ziplock bag or large airtight container for up to 5 days. If stacking them, place parchment paper between the layers to prevent sticking.

Freeze: These cookies freeze, but the layers do tend to want to separate a bit. They still taste great but may not hold up as well or look as pretty.
