Ingredient Notes

Labeled ingredients needed to make philly cheesesteak sloppy joes.
  • Beef: Because this recipe is loaded up with delicious sauce and seasonings, I like to use lean ground beef.
  • Veggies: Dice up a small green pepper and a yellow onion for sweetness and a varied texture.
  • Ketchup: Incorporate the tomato base of sloppy joe sauce with ketchup.
  • Cornstarch: Cornstarch helps thicken the sauce.
  • Worcestershire sauce: Add a savory, meaty taste with Worcestershire sauce.
  • Seasoning: Bring flavor to the meat, veggies, and sloppy joe sauce with classic Philly cheesesteak seasonings, like garlic powder, onion powder, dried oregano, coarse kosher salt, and black pepper.
  • Beef broth: I prefer low-sodium beef broth to bring the sauce together. You can use what you have on hand and typically use in your kitchen.
  • Cheese: You’ll need 6 slices of provolone cheese. For the best flavor and melt factor, get the cheese freshly sliced from the deli.
  • Buns: Use your favorite brand of hamburger buns to hold all the saucy, cheesy, meaty goodness!

Variations and Substitutions

  • Choose Your Cheese: Use whatever cheese you’d like! Try white American cheese, swiss cheese, cheddar, mozzarella cheese, or a combination of your favorites. Add Cheez Whiz for another classic Philly cheesesteak element.
  • Grated Melted Cheese: For extra melty cheese, freshly grate it from a block.
  • Protein Options: For a healthier sloppy joe, try this recipe with ground turkey or ground chicken.
  • Philly Cheese Steak Hamburger Helper Skillet: Swap the buns for macaroni noodles to make the skillet version of this delicious recipe.
  • Spicy Cheesesteak Sloppy Joe Sandwiches: To kick up this recipe, add chopped jalapenos or red pepper flakes to the sauce.
  • Buns: Use brioche buns or hoagie rolls, if preferred.

How To Make Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joe Recipe

Be sure to see the recipe card below for exact ingredients and full recipe instructions!

Step 1 | Prep the veggies and cook the meat

Prepping the ingredients makes cooking fast and easy! Get them all diced and sliced and ready to toss in. For an even quicker option, you can often find these already diced in the produce section of the grocery store.

Then dive right in by adding the ground beef, diced bell peppers, mushrooms, and onion to a large skillet over medium heat. Stir the ingredients for 5 to 7 minutes or until the meat is no longer pink and the juices run clear.

Step 2 | Add seasonings and sauce

Next, stir in the minced garlic, ketchup, cornstarch, Worcestershire, garlic powder, onion powder, dried oregano, salt, and pepper to the skillet, mixing until thoroughly combined.

Then, pour the beef broth, let it simmer, and stir for 3 to 4 minutes. Remove the skillet from the burner once the liquid has reduced.

Step 3 | Assemble sandwiches

Now, scoop the ground beef mixture onto the hamburger buns.

And, of course, it wouldn’t be a cheesesteak without the cheese! The cheesy topping holds the meat together on the sandwich, so don’t skip the provolone! Top each with a slice of provolone cheese, and dig in!

Tips

  • If you do not use lean beef, you will want to drain the fat after the meat has been cooked.
  • Cast-Iron Skillet– The non-stick surface of a cast iron skillet makes this simple recipe even easier!
  • Extra Melty– The warm mixture will melt the cheese, but you can also place it under the broiler if you want it bubbly and golden brown.

Recipe FAQs

Can Philly cheesesteak sloppy joes be made in the instant pot?

Absolutely– This is a great recipe for the instant pot! Start in ‘saute’ mode to brown the meat, green bell pepper, and onions. Then, add the remaining ingredients, saving the cheese slices for last. Cook on ‘manual’ for five minutes and quick-release the pressure. Add the cheese, let it melt, and toss the meat mixture on some buns to serve.

What is the best meat for cheesesteak?

For a traditional Philly cheesesteak, use thinly sliced ribeye steak or a cheaper alternative, like sirloin.

What is a Sloppy Joe?

Regular sloppy joes are a popular type of sandwich with saucy ground beef, chopped onions, and a tomato-based sauce served on a hamburger bun.

Storage

Refrigerate: The leftover sloppy joe meat mixture can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days. Just be sure the recipe completely cools before storing.

Freeze for Long-term Storage: Once cooled, add the cheesesteak mixture to freezer-safe containers and store for up to 2 months. Then, thaw it overnight in the refrigerator before reheating and enjoying it again.
